Tiktok Ban Us 2023

Senate Passes Bill to Force Sale or Ban of TikTok

Bill Now Heads to President Biden's Desk for Signature

Provision Tucked into National Security Package

WEB WASHINGTON - Tucked inside the sprawling $95 billion national security package headed to President Joe Biden's desk is a provision that would force the sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner ByteDance or ban it outright.

The bill, which passed the Senate on April 23, 2024, by a vote of 94-4, is the latest in a series of legislative efforts to address concerns over the popular short-form video app's ties to the Chinese government.

The bill's passage is a major victory for lawmakers who have long argued that TikTok poses a national security threat due to its potential to collect sensitive user data and its potential use as a propaganda tool by the Chinese Communist Party.

The bill would require ByteDance to sell TikTok's US operations within 90 days of its passage. If a sale is not completed within that time frame, the app would be banned from operating in the United States.

The Trump administration attempted to ban TikTok in 2020, but the effort was blocked by courts. The Biden administration has taken a more cautious approach, but has also expressed concerns about TikTok's security risks.

TikTok has denied that it poses a national security threat and has said that it is committed to protecting user privacy. The company has also said that it is willing to work with the US government to address any concerns.

It remains to be seen whether President Biden will sign the bill into law. The White House has not yet commented on the bill's passage.
